How Pets Work In Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows allows you to collect animals throughout the world and place them inside your Hideout as permanent pets.

Once an animal is added to your Codex, it becomes available in the Hideout Build menu where it can freely roam around your base.

Pets include:

  • Dogs
  • Cats
  • Wild animals
  • Quest animals
  • Special named pets

Some are found naturally during exploration, while others require quests or special activities.

Unlock The Hideout First

Before pets become available, you must unlock the Hideout during the main story quest:

From Sparks to Flame

After this point, Naoe gains access to the full open world and can begin collecting animals.

How To Find Pets

There are several ways to unlock animals for your Hideout.

Pet Dogs And Cats

The easiest pets to unlock are normal dogs and cats found throughout towns, roads, temples, and villages.

When approaching a friendly animal, you will receive a prompt to pet it.

After interacting with a unique animal type, it is automatically added to your Codex.

Different breeds and colors count as separate entries, including:

  • Black Akitas
  • Golden Akitas
  • Puppies
  • Various cats

Which means yes, the game quietly encourages you to pet every animal you see.

Correct design decision honestly.

Complete Sumi-e Animal Activities

Wild animals are unlocked through optional Sumi-e activities.

While exploring, you may encounter opportunities where Naoe can quietly observe and paint animals in the wild.

These activities usually involve sneaking close without scaring the creature away.

Completing the activity adds the animal to your Codex as a collectible Sumi-e entry.

Possible animals include:

  • Deer
  • Foxes
  • Boars
  • Birds
  • Other wildlife

Buy Pets From Traders

Certain merchants sell animals that can be added directly to your collection.

Some additional pets are also available through the in-game store.

Trader inventory varies depending on progression and region.

Unlock Special Quest Pets

Some animals are tied to quests and become unique companions afterward.

The first major example is:

Tsuki-maru

You unlock this dog during the quest:

Thrown to the Dogs

After completing the quest, Tsuki-maru becomes a permanent unique pet for your Hideout.

Unlike standard animals, unique pets can only be placed once.

How To Add Pets To Your Hideout

Once animals are registered in your Codex, return to your Hideout.

To place pets:

  1. Access the Hideout management table
  2. Open the Build menu
  3. Navigate to the final tab marked with the dog icon
  4. Select the animal you want
  5. Place it on an empty outdoor tile

After placement, the animal will freely roam the Hideout.

You can usually place multiple copies of normal animals, but unique pets like Tsuki-maru are limited to one placement.

Can You Pet Animals In The Hideout?

Yes.

Even wild animals placed in the Hideout can usually be interacted with and petted afterward.

Which means your peaceful ninja base can eventually become:

  • A dog sanctuary
  • A cat village
  • A wildlife preserve
  • A slightly concerning boar colony

All equally valid outcomes.

Best Pets To Collect Early

Some of the easiest early animals to unlock include:

  • Town cats
  • Village dogs
  • Tsuki-maru
  • Early Sumi-e wildlife

Since pets do not provide gameplay bonuses, the best choices are honestly whichever ones make your Hideout feel more alive.

And maybe whichever ones look least likely to bite visiting merchants.

Are Pets Worth Unlocking?

Absolutely.

Pets are mostly cosmetic, but they add a huge amount of personality and atmosphere to the Hideout.

Combined with allies, buildings, decorations, and upgrades, the base slowly evolves into a living village instead of just a menu screen.

Completing these vaults rewards legendary gear, rare loot, and one of the game’s biggest secret discoveries.

Many legendary treasure rooms also remain locked until every Samurai Daisho in the castle has been eliminated.
