Quick Answer
To unlock the Zashiki in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you must progress far enough into the story to unlock Yasuke, then start the Iron Hand Guild assassination questline in Sakai.
After speaking to Imai Sokun, eliminate the first target, Merchant Tamao, in Kyoto. Once he is defeated, the Zashiki becomes available to build in your Hideout.

What Is The Zashiki In Assassin’s Creed Shadows?
The Zashiki is a special Hideout room in Assassin’s Creed Shadows that improves your healing efficiency.
Once built, it increases ration effectiveness by:
- 20% increased healing efficiency
It works similarly to the Tea Room, making it one of the best utility upgrades for longer stealth infiltrations, castle raids, and difficult fights.
How To Unlock The Zashiki
When you first unlock the Hideout, the Zashiki remains locked with the message:
“Offer support to a Settsu merchant.”
The game does not explain this very clearly because the unlock is actually tied to a later assassination questline.
You must:
- Progress the main story
- Unlock Yasuke
- Reach the Iron Hand Guild questline
Until then, the room cannot be built.
Start The Iron Hand Guild Questline
After unlocking Yasuke, return to Sakai in the Settsu province.
A new objective marker appears there labeled:
The Iron Hand Guild
At the location, speak with Imai Sokun, who you previously met during the Tea Ceremony section of the Searching Sakai quest.
After talking to him:
- The Iron Hand Guild target board unlocks
- Multiple assassination targets become available
- The first target becomes accessible immediately
Where To Find Merchant Tamao
The first assassination target is Merchant Tamao.
You can find him in central Kyoto:
- East of Honnoji Temple
- West of Honpoji Temple
This is one of the easier targets in the chain because the area is already accessible relatively early.
How To Draw Out Merchant Tamao
When you arrive, nearby workers mention that the manager does not want to be disturbed.
To lure Merchant Tamao out:
- Smash nearby jars and property
- Cause enough destruction around the area
Eventually he will come out of hiding.
At that point, all that remains is the assassination itself.
Very subtle shinobi tactics honestly.
Build Cost For The Zashiki
Once Merchant Tamao is eliminated, the Zashiki unlocks automatically in the Hideout builder.
Building costs:
- 90 Crops
- 370 Wood
- 280 Stone
- 960 Mon
After construction, your healing items become noticeably stronger during combat and exploration.
Is The Zashiki Worth Building?
Absolutely.
The Zashiki is one of the best passive utility upgrades in the game because it improves every ration you use without requiring any additional management.
This becomes especially useful during:
- Castle infiltrations
- Boss fights
- Long stealth runs
- High difficulty combat
- Late-game encounters
Combined with the Tea Room, healing efficiency becomes dramatically better overall.
Best Hideout Upgrades To Pair With The Zashiki
The best companion upgrades are:
- Tea Room
- Forge
- Study
- Stables
The Tea Room stacks nicely with the healing focus of the Zashiki, while the other buildings improve progression, scouting, and crafting efficiency.

How To Unlock Secret Castle Rooms In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To unlock secret castle rooms in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you need to use environmental tools like explosive jars, hidden crawlspaces, grappling points, keys, and mechanical puzzle systems.
Most hidden rooms are tied to either Naoe’s stealth traversal abilities or Yasuke’s brute strength. Look for suspicious wall layouts, ceiling hatches, drainage systems, and locked upper keeps inside major castles.
Many legendary treasure rooms also remain locked until every Samurai Daisho in the castle has been eliminated.
