Assassin’s Creed Shadows Guide
When Do You Unlock Yasuke In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
You unlock Yasuke as a fully playable character near the end of the Temple of the Horseman mission in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Quick Answer
You unlock Yasuke as a fully playable character near the end of the Temple of the Horseman mission in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Most players reach this point around 10–20 hours into the main story depending on how much side content they complete.
To unlock him faster, focus mainly on the early story targets, especially The Wounded and The Golden Teppo. Once Yasuke joins permanently, you can freely swap between him and Naoe outside of combat and restricted areas.

When Yasuke Becomes Playable
Yasuke technically appears at the start of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but you only control him briefly during the opening section. After the prologue, the game shifts fully toward Naoe for the entire first major act.
Yasuke officially becomes playable again near the end of the Temple of the Horseman mission. This mission acts as the conclusion of the first major story arc and unlocks the ability to freely switch between both protagonists.
For most players, reaching this point takes around 10–20 hours depending on exploration, side quests, and optional activities.
Fastest Way To Unlock Yasuke
If your goal is unlocking Yasuke quickly, focus primarily on the main story objectives.
The most important early targets are:
- The Wounded
- The Golden Teppo
After eliminating both targets, return to the Hideout and continue progressing through the next available major story missions.
Eventually, the story moves into the historical Honnō-ji Incident sequence. After several major cutscenes and gameplay sections, Yasuke permanently joins your roster.
Yasuke And Naoe Play Very Differently
The game is designed around two completely different playstyles.
Naoe focuses heavily on stealth, mobility, climbing, and classic assassin gameplay. She uses the hidden blade, moves quickly across rooftops, and performs much better during stealth infiltration.
Yasuke is built for direct combat. He uses heavier weapons, stronger armor, and can survive much more damage during open fights.
However, Yasuke also has several limitations:
- Slower climbing
- No Eagle Vision
- Cannot walk tightropes
- Cannot perform traditional Leap of Faith jumps
In exchange, he hits like an absolute truck during combat encounters.
How Character Switching Works
Once both characters are unlocked, you can swap between Yasuke and Naoe in two main ways.
Inventory Or Mastery Menu
Inside the inventory or mastery screens, hold the swap button prompt shown at the bottom of the screen. The game reloads your current location and switches you to the other character.
Fast Travel Switching
While fast traveling, you can also choose to arrive as the other character immediately. This makes changing playstyles much faster while exploring different regions.
When You Cannot Switch Characters
There are some important restrictions on character swapping.
You cannot switch while:
- In combat
- Inside restricted areas
- During certain story missions
- During character-specific activities
If the game prevents fast travel, it usually prevents character switching as well.
This becomes especially important during castle infiltrations and major story encounters, so choose your character before heading inside. Nobody wants to realize halfway through a stealth mission that they brought the human battering ram instead of the ninja.

How Long To Beat Assassin’s Creed Shadows
The main story in Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes around 40–45 hours if you focus mostly on story missions and only complete enough side content to stay properly leveled.

How To Open Every Kuji-Kiri Meditation Location In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
There are 22 Kuji-Kiri meditation locations in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and they can only be completed while playing as Naoe. Each meditation spot appears as an orange meditation icon after discovering nearby white question marks on the map.
To complete a Kuji-Kiri, sit on the meditation mat and finish the rhythm-based QTE sequence. If the button prompts become too difficult to memorize, you can enable Auto Quick Time Events in the gameplay settings to automatically complete every meditation challenge.
Finishing all 22 Kuji-Kiri locations unlocks the Zen Master trophy and rewards knowledge points used for upgrading your skill tree.

All Hidden Vault Puzzle Solutions In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Hidden vaults in Assassin’s Creed Shadows mainly appear as Kofun tomb dungeons and the massive Glyph Door mystery tied to the A Puzzlement quest.

Completing these vaults rewards legendary gear, rare loot, and one of the game’s biggest secret discoveries.

How To Unlock Secret Castle Rooms In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
To unlock secret castle rooms in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you need to use environmental tools like explosive jars, hidden crawlspaces, grappling points, keys, and mechanical puzzle systems.
Most hidden rooms are tied to either Naoe’s stealth traversal abilities or Yasuke’s brute strength. Look for suspicious wall layouts, ceiling hatches, drainage systems, and locked upper keeps inside major castles.
Many legendary treasure rooms also remain locked until every Samurai Daisho in the castle has been eliminated.

All Legendary Armor Locations In Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Most Legendary Armor pieces in Assassin’s Creed Shadows are found inside Legendary Treasure Chests hidden within heavily guarded castles, forts, caves, and vaults across Japan.
Each armor set includes a head piece and body piece with unique gameplay perks designed specifically for either Naoe or Yasuke. To unlock castle treasure rooms, you usually need to eliminate every Samurai Daisho inside the area first.
