Can You Upgrade Weapons In Cyberpunk 2077?

Yes, but only certain weapons.

Following the major updates to Cyberpunk 2077, regular weapons can no longer be upgraded. Only Iconic Weapons can be improved through the upgrade system.

This means that if you find a standard pistol, rifle, shotgun, or melee weapon that you like, you cannot continuously upgrade it throughout the game.

However, Iconic weapons can be upgraded all the way to endgame quality.

How To Upgrade Iconic Weapons

Upgrading weapons is done through the Crafting menu.

Step 1

Open your main menu.

Step 2

Navigate to:

InventoryCrafting

Step 3

Select the Upgrades tab.

Step 4

Choose an eligible Iconic Weapon from your inventory.

Step 5

Spend the required Item Components to upgrade its tier.

Once upgraded, the weapon's damage increases and it becomes more effective against higher-level enemies.

Upgrade Costs

Each rarity tier requires crafting materials.

Tier 1

  • Tier 1 → Tier 1+: 40 / 75 Components

Tier 2

  • Tier 2 → Tier 2+: 40 / 75 Components

Tier 3

  • Tier 3 → Tier 3+: 40 / 75 Components

Tier 4

  • Tier 4 → Tier 4+: 40 / 75 Components

Tier 5

  • Tier 5: 40 Components
  • Tier 5+: 75 Components
  • Tier 5++: 200 Components

Reaching Tier 5++ requires a large investment, but it allows many Iconic weapons to remain viable throughout the entire game.

What Does Upgrading Improve?

Weapon upgrades primarily increase:

  • Damage output

Upgrading does not significantly change the weapon's special effects or unique Iconic traits.

The main purpose is keeping a favorite weapon competitive as enemies become stronger.

How To Get Upgrade Components

The best source of crafting materials is dismantling equipment.

Item Components can be obtained by breaking down:

  • Weapons
  • Clothing
  • Weapon mods

To dismantle equipment:

  1. Open Inventory.
  2. Select an item.
  3. Hold the dismantle button.
  4. Receive components based on the item's rarity.

Higher-tier gear produces higher-tier components.

For example:

  • Tier 5 items provide Tier 5 Components.
  • Tier 4 items provide Tier 4 Components.

Fastest Way To Farm Components

The most reliable method is collecting weapons from defeated enemies.

During missions and gigs, enemies constantly drop gear that can be dismantled into components.

You can also purchase weapons of a specific tier and dismantle them if you're short on crafting materials.

This is expensive, but it can be useful when pushing a favorite Iconic weapon toward Tier 5++.

Should You Upgrade Every Iconic Weapon?

Not necessarily.

Upgrade materials become expensive at higher tiers, especially when approaching Tier 5++.

It's usually better to invest heavily in the weapons you actively use rather than spreading resources across every Iconic weapon you collect.

If you find an Iconic weapon that matches your build, upgrading it can easily carry you through the rest of the game.

Step-by-Step

  1. Obtain an Iconic weapon.
  2. Open the Crafting menu.
  3. Select the Upgrades tab.
  4. Check the required Item Components.
  5. Dismantle unwanted gear if needed.
  6. Upgrade the weapon.
  7. Continue upgrading as higher tiers become available.

Best Strategy

  • Save upgrade materials for weapons you regularly use.
  • Prioritize upgrading your primary weapon first.
  • Dismantle unwanted loot instead of selling everything.
  • Focus on bringing favorite Iconic weapons up to current content levels.
  • Don't waste Tier 5 Components on weapons you plan to replace.

Tips

  • Most players should dismantle more gear than they sell once they begin upgrading Iconic weapons.
  • Tier 5++ upgrades are extremely expensive, so plan ahead.
  • An upgraded Iconic weapon can remain useful for the entire game.
  • If you're constantly changing weapons, save your components until you settle on a favorite build.
