How To Defeat Rufus Shinra In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

To defeat Rufus Shinra in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, play defensively and wait for his reload animation after Guns Akimbo.

Quick Answer

To defeat Rufus Shinra in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, play defensively and wait for his reload animation after Guns Akimbo. Rufus blocks most direct attacks, so your best opening is using Braver or Focused Thrust during his reload to pressure or instantly stagger him.

During the first phase, counter Darkstar using Punisher Mode and eliminate the dog quickly to make the fight much easier. Dodge most of Rufus’s gunfire instead of blocking, maintain buffs like Haste and Barrier, and avoid overcommitting after his reload window ends.

Rufus Shinra Boss Overview

Rufus Shinra is one of the hardest one-on-one fights in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. You face him during Chapter 12 at the Gold Saucer, and unlike most bosses, this battle heavily punishes aggressive playstyles.

Rufus:

  • blocks normal attacks constantly
  • counters reckless aggression
  • moves extremely fast
  • pressures Cloud from range
  • punishes greedy combos immediately

The fight becomes dramatically easier once you understand his reload mechanic and stop trying to brute force damage.

Best Materia Setup

Before the fight, equip:

  • First Strike Materia
  • Speed Materia
  • Chakra
  • Healing
  • Steadfast Block
  • Precision Defense Focus

Helpful buffs include:

  • Haste
  • Barrier

Since Rufus is immune to elemental damage, focus entirely on physical pressure and ATB efficiency instead of elemental builds.

Rufus’s Biggest Weakness – Reloading

The most important mechanic in the fight is Rufus’s reload animation.

After using Guns Akimbo, Rufus pauses briefly to reload his weapons. This is your main opening for damage.

As soon as the reload begins:

  • use Braver
  • or use Focused Thrust

Landing either ability during the reload pressures Rufus instantly, and Braver can stagger him immediately if timed correctly.

Once staggered, unload your strongest attacks:

  • Infinity’s End
  • Focused combos
  • Limit Breaks
  • ATB abilities

Do not stay aggressive after the reload ends. Rufus immediately returns to counter-attacking and can punish Cloud extremely fast.

How To Handle Darkstar

During the first major phase, Rufus fights alongside Darkstar.

In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the dog is resistant to most status effects, so you must defeat it directly rather than cheesing the fight with sleep effects.

Best Strategy For Darkstar

Use Punisher Mode aggressively against physical lunges and spinning attacks.

Successful Punisher counters:

  • pressure Darkstar quickly
  • build stagger
  • generate ATB safely

Focus your ATB abilities on eliminating the dog first.

Recommended abilities:

  • Triple Slash
  • Focused Thrust
  • Punisher counters

Once Darkstar goes down, the fight becomes a much cleaner one-on-one duel against Rufus.

Dodge More Than You Block

Rufus’s gunfire deals heavy chip damage and can overwhelm Cloud if blocked repeatedly.

Instead:

  • dodge sideways frequently
  • keep medium distance
  • wait for his combo finishers
  • preserve ATB for punish windows

This fight rewards patience much more than aggression.

Honestly, Rufus fights like the world’s most annoying Devil May Cry player.

Best Time To Heal

If you get overwhelmed:

  • back away
  • use Chakra
  • build ATB with ranged slashes
  • reset your positioning

Using ranged attacks while retreating is surprisingly effective for rebuilding ATB safely.

Avoid panic-healing directly in front of Rufus, since he can instantly interrupt recovery attempts.

Best Punish Sequence

The safest high-damage combo is:

  1. Wait for Guns Akimbo
  2. Dodge the attack
  3. Watch for reload animation
  4. Use Braver or Focused Thrust
  5. Stagger Rufus
  6. Use Infinity’s End
  7. Back away immediately afterward

Repeating this sequence consistently makes the fight far more manageable.

Why Rufus Is Difficult

Most bosses in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reward aggressive stagger pressure. Rufus does the opposite.

He forces players to:

  • slow down
  • counter properly
  • read animations
  • manage spacing carefully
  • punish specific openings

Once the timing clicks, the fight becomes much more controlled. Until then, he honestly feels like he’s personally offended you opened the pause menu.
