God of War Combat Guide For Beginners
Combat in God of War is built around defense, timing, and positioning.
Quick Answer
Combat in God of War is built around defense, timing, and positioning. Success comes from learning when to Parry, when to Dodge, and when to create openings with ranged attacks instead of constantly attacking.
Mastering your shield, axe throws, and stun attacks is often more important than simply dealing damage. Even weaker enemies can become dangerous if you ignore defensive mechanics.

Full Guide Intro
Combat in God of War is more deliberate than previous entries in the series. Instead of overwhelming enemies with nonstop aggression, players are encouraged to read attacks, defend carefully, and take advantage of openings.
Learning the core combat mechanics early will make every boss fight, Valkyrie encounter, and enemy group much easier to handle.
Understanding Combat
Kratos is powerful, but he is never invincible.
Most enemies remain dangerous throughout the game, which means careless attacks can quickly lead to defeat. Success comes from using all available tools instead of relying solely on basic axe swings.
Combat revolves around:
- Parrying
- Dodging
- Ranged Combat
- Stun Damage
- Proper positioning
How Parrying Works
Parrying is performed by raising your shield just before an attack connects.
Successful parries offer two major advantages:
- The attacking enemy becomes staggered
- Nearby enemies are pushed back
This creates breathing room and often turns a defensive action into an offensive opportunity.
Attack indicators help identify whether an attack can be parried.
- Yellow attacks can be parried
- Red attacks cannot be blocked or parried safely
Learning parry timing is one of the most valuable combat skills in the game.
How Dodging Works
Dodging allows Kratos to avoid attacks entirely.
In addition to moving out of danger, dodges provide brief invulnerability frames that can protect you from attacks that would otherwise connect.
Dodging becomes especially important against:
- Unblockable attacks
- Area attacks
- Fast enemy combos
- Boss abilities
Many encounters become significantly easier once you learn when to dodge instead of blocking.
Using The Leviathan Axe At Range
The Leviathan Axe is not just a melee weapon.
Thrown axe attacks deal damage comparable to close-range attacks and can be used safely from a distance.
This makes ranged combat extremely useful against:
- Dangerous enemies
- Flying enemies
- Targets positioned far away
- Environmental hazards
Players should never feel forced to stay in melee range if a safer ranged option exists.
Headshots And Weak Points
Axe throws become even stronger when aimed at enemy weak points.
When aiming:
- An open pink reticle indicates a normal hit
- A closed red reticle indicates a weak point or headshot
Landing these shots improves damage output and can quickly eliminate dangerous enemies before they reach Kratos.
Tripping Enemies
Throwing the axe at an enemy's legs can knock them off balance.
A successful trip can:
- Interrupt attacks
- Create openings
- Knock enemies to the ground
Even missed throws remain useful because the returning axe can still strike enemies on its way back.
Use Environmental Hazards
Many combat arenas contain environmental objects that can be used against enemies.
Explosive containers and hazards can damage multiple enemies at once when struck by the axe.
Taking advantage of the environment often allows players to thin enemy groups before direct combat begins.
Don't Ignore Unarmed Combat
Kratos' fists are surprisingly effective.
While they deal less direct damage than weapons, unarmed attacks build Stun Damage much faster.
As the stun meter fills:
- Enemies become vulnerable
- A finishing prompt appears
- Powerful execution attacks become available
These finishers deal massive damage and often eliminate weaker enemies instantly.
Because Kratos is invulnerable during the execution animation, stun attacks can also provide a valuable defensive tool during chaotic fights.

Best Early Talismans In God of War
Two of the strongest early talismans in God of War are the Golden Talisman of Protection and the Amulet of Kvasir. The Golden Talisman can be found shortly after reaching the Lake of Nine at Stone Falls, while the Amulet of Kvasir becomes available after reaching Alfheim.
The Golden Talisman improves defense and parrying, while the Amulet of Kvasir rewards perfectly timed dodges by slowing time. Both remain useful well into the later stages of the game.
Story, Characters & Side Quests
What To Do After Beating God of War
After finishing God of War, there is still plenty left to do. Players can challenge the Valkyries, explore Muspelheim and Niflheim, complete unfinished Favors, free optional dragons, start New Game+, and take on the powerful Valkyrie Queen.
Many of the game's toughest battles, best rewards, and most challenging content are found after the main story ends, making the post-game one of the most rewarding parts of the adventure.

How To Defeat Valkyrie Queen Sigrun In God of War
The best way to defeat Sigrun, the Valkyrie Queen in God of War, is to arrive fully prepared with upgraded gear, maximum health, strong runic attacks, and abilities that can slow time. Before challenging her, defeat all other Valkyries and place their helmets in the throne circle to unlock the fight.
Because Sigrun uses abilities from every other Valkyrie, she is dangerous at both close and long range. Strong runic builds, healing effects, and careful timing are key to surviving one of the hardest boss fights in the game.
Locations & Collectibles
All Odin's Raven Locations In God of War
There are 51 Odin's Ravens hidden throughout God of War. They are spread across Midgard, Alfheim, Helheim, optional regions around the Lake of Nine, and several Valkyrie chambers.
Many Ravens can be found during the main story, but some require late-game abilities or story progression. Completing the collection requires revisiting earlier areas and exploring optional regions thoroughly.

How To Defeat Valkyrie Rota In God of War
Rota is the Helheim Valkyrie in God of War and relies heavily on aerial attacks, unblockable dives, and a devastating head stomp. The key to victory is learning her attack patterns, blocking her ranged projectiles, dodging her dive attacks, and punishing her whenever she lands.
Before the fight, fill your Runic Attack meters, enter with a full Spartan Rage bar, and bring a Resurrection Stone. Most of Rota's attacks leave her vulnerable for a short time after they finish.
