How The Carl Stucky Boss Fight Works
Carl Stucky is the first major Taken boss encounter in Alan Wake Remastered. Unlike regular enemies, he moves faster, hits harder, and aggressively closes distance while pressuring players during the early game when resources are still limited.
The fight is designed to teach players how to combine flashlight management, dodging, and high-damage weapons effectively.
While Stucky can technically be defeated with standard weapons, the intended strategy is using the nearby Flare Gun to end the fight quickly and safely.
Grab The Flare Gun First
As soon as the encounter begins, prioritize reaching the red supply crate nearby.
Inside the crate you will find:
- The Flare Gun
- Additional supplies
- Resources that make the fight dramatically easier
Trying to defeat Carl Stucky with only the revolver usually wastes ammo and increases the chance of taking heavy damage during his aggressive melee rushes.
Once you grab the flare gun, create some distance before preparing your shot.
Burn Away Stucky's Darkness Shield
Before damaging Carl Stucky, you must remove the darkness shield protecting him.
Use the flashlight focus ability by holding the focus button:
- L2 on PlayStation
- Left Trigger on Xbox
- Right Click on PC
Focus the beam directly on him until the darkness surrounding his body burns away completely.
The stronger focused beam removes his protection much faster than normal flashlight use.
Finish Him With The Flare Gun
Once his darkness shield is gone, fire a single Flare Gun shot directly at him.
A direct flare hit instantly defeats Carl Stucky regardless of remaining health, ending the fight almost immediately.
If you miss the shot or run out of flare ammo:
- Burn away the darkness shield again
- Switch to the shotgun
- Finish him with close-range blasts
The shotgun is much safer than relying on the revolver during this fight because of Stucky's speed and aggression.
How To Dodge Carl Stucky's Attacks
Carl Stucky attacks with quick melee swings that can remove a large chunk of health if they connect.
To avoid damage:
- Wait for his swing animation
- Dodge at the last possible moment
- Tap the dodge button right before impact
A successful cinematic dodge gives Alan extra invincibility frames and creates valuable breathing room.
This fight is basically the game politely informing you that panic rolling through Bright Falls is now part of your permanent lifestyle.

Best Strategy

- Use flashlight focus instead of standard beam mode
- Create distance before firing the flare shot
- Use the shotgun if the flare misses
- Dodge late instead of spamming evasive movement
Warnings
Trying to fight Carl Stucky with only the revolver can waste a large amount of early-game ammo and make the encounter much harder than intended.
Rewards
- Progression through Episode 1
- Introduction to advanced combat mechanics
- Flare Gun combat tutorial experience
Tips
The first time Carl Stucky charges at you full speed through the darkness is usually the moment players realize Bright Falls is going to be a lot less relaxing than the opening cutscenes suggested.
