How The Poltergeist Bulldozer Fight Works
The Poltergeist Bulldozer appears during Episode 3 of Alan Wake Remastered and acts as one of the game's major possessed object encounters.
Unlike standard Taken enemies, the bulldozer itself becomes possessed by darkness and aggressively charges toward Alan while other enemies attack at the same time. The fight is less about raw damage and more about positioning, crowd control, and properly stripping away the darkness shield protecting the machine.
The bulldozer hits extremely hard if it connects, so survival and spacing matter more than trying to rush damage.
Use Flashbangs To Break The Darkness Shield
The fastest and safest method is using Flashbangs.
When the bulldozer slows down or pauses after charging:
- Throw a Flashbang directly toward it
- Wait for the darkness shield to weaken
- Repeat with additional Flashbangs if needed
Usually 2 to 3 Flashbangs are enough to heavily damage or completely remove the darkness surrounding the vehicle.
Once the shield breaks, the bulldozer becomes vulnerable to standard weapons.
This is by far the cleanest strategy if you have enough throwable resources available.
Use Flashlight Focus If You Run Out Of Throwables
If you are low on Flashbangs or flares, you can still destroy the bulldozer using the focused flashlight beam.
Hold the focus beam directly on the vehicle while maintaining distance:
- L2 on PlayStation
- Left Trigger on Xbox
- Right Click on PC
The focused beam slowly burns away the darkness shield over time.
This method is slower and more dangerous because the bulldozer continues charging aggressively while you expose yourself during the beam focus.
Stay mobile and avoid overcommitting to long flashlight exposure.
Eliminate The Taken First
One of the biggest mistakes during this fight is ignoring the surrounding Taken enemies.
Trying to focus entirely on the bulldozer while regular enemies attack from behind usually leads to quick deaths, especially on higher difficulties.
Before fully committing to the bulldozer:
- Clear nearby Taken enemies
- Use flares or Flashbangs for crowd control
- Create open movement space
- Reload all weapons
Once the smaller enemies are gone, the fight becomes much easier to manage.
Use The Environment For Cover
The bulldozer frequently charges straight toward Alan, making environmental positioning extremely important.
Use objects like:
- Gates
- Walls
- Solid structures
- Corners
- Barriers
These can block or interrupt some charge paths and buy valuable time to recover, reload, or burn away the darkness shield safely.
Standing in open areas for too long is usually a bad idea unless you are actively dodging.
The first time a possessed bulldozer tries to murder you with supernatural construction equipment is also the moment Alan Wake fully commits to becoming the weirdest workplace safety video ever made.

Best Strategy
- Kill nearby Taken enemies first
- Use Flashbangs whenever possible
- Dodge sideways during charge attacks
- Keep medium to long distance from the bulldozer
- Use walls and structures for cover during recovery
Warnings
Trying to tunnel vision on the bulldozer while ignoring nearby Taken enemies can quickly lead to getting trapped or hit from multiple directions at once.
Rewards
- Progression through Episode 3
- Advanced combat experience against possessed objects
- Better understanding of crowd control mechanics
Tips
The bulldozer looks terrifying at first, but the fight becomes much easier once you realize the real danger is usually the smaller Taken sneaking up behind you while you panic at the giant haunted construction vehicle.
