Quick Answer
To defeat Rennala Queen Of The Full Moon in Elden Ring, use aggressive melee attacks, bleed weapons, and Spirit Ashes to constantly pressure her during Phase 2. Because Rennala has extremely high magic resistance, physical damage and bleed effects work much better than offensive sorceries.
During Phase 1, break her magical shield by attacking three glowing singing scholars. In Phase 2, sprint toward her opening Comet Azur beam attack, dodge sideways, and stay close to stagger her before she can cast stronger spells or summon spirits.

Rennala Queen Of The Full Moon Boss Guide
Rennala Queen Of The Full Moon is the boss of the Academy Of Raya Lucaria and one of the most unique fights in Elden Ring. Unlike previous bosses, this encounter combines a gimmick-heavy first phase with a highly aggressive magic duel during the second half of the fight.
The key to defeating Rennala is staying aggressive during Phase 2 while avoiding her powerful magic attacks and summoned spirits.
Recommended Preparation
Before entering the fight, it helps to have:
- Strong physical damage weapons
- Bleed weapons if possible
- Spirit Ashes
- High magic resistance gear
- Enough mobility to dodge repeated spell attacks
Rennala has extremely high resistance to magic damage, so pure spellcasters may struggle unless they rely on physical-based sorceries like rock attacks or secondary melee weapons.
Bleed weapons are especially effective because Rennala has low poise and can be staggered repeatedly by aggressive attacks.
Phase 1 Puzzle Strategy
The first phase is primarily a puzzle encounter.
Rennala floats in the air protected by a glowing magical shield while crawling scholars maintain the barrier from below.
To break the shield:
- Look for scholars glowing with a golden aura
- Listen for the singing scholars
- Strike three glowing scholars total
Each time you break a scholar’s spell, Rennala’s shield weakens.
After the third scholar is hit, Rennala crashes to the floor and becomes vulnerable.
Immediately rush in and use your strongest melee attacks before she recovers.
Avoid Rennala’s Explosion
After taking enough damage, Rennala begins glowing and floating back upward.
Back away immediately when this happens.
A massive magical explosion follows shortly afterward and can deal heavy damage if you stay too close.
Repeat the puzzle process several times until her health reaches zero and the Phase 2 cinematic begins.
Use the short pause before the cutscene to heal and refresh buffs.
Phase 2 Strategy
Phase 2 transports the fight into a large moonlit arena where Rennala becomes significantly more dangerous.
She almost always opens with Comet Azur, a massive magical beam attack.
As soon as the phase begins:
- Sprint directly toward her
- Dodge sideways the moment she fires
This places you close enough to immediately begin attacking before she can safely chain additional spells.
Stay Aggressive
Aggressive melee pressure is the safest strategy during this phase.
Rennala has:
- Very low poise
- Weak physical defense
- Poor close-range defense
Repeated melee attacks, jumping attacks, and Spirit Ash support can stagger her constantly and interrupt many of her strongest spells.
The longer you allow Rennala to freely cast magic, the more dangerous the fight becomes.
Spirit Summons
Once the fight progresses, Rennala begins summoning spirit allies including:
- Wolves
- A troll
- A dragon
- Other spirit companions
Do not waste too much time fighting the summons directly.
Instead:
- Continue dodging around them
- Stay focused on closing distance
- Keep pressure on Rennala herself
Many summons disappear naturally after a short period.
Avoid The Moon Attack
One of Rennala’s most dangerous attacks creates a massive glowing moon that slowly drifts toward you.
As soon as she lifts into the air and summons the moon:
- Back away immediately
- Keep moving until the explosion finishes
Trying to stay aggressive during this attack often results in massive damage.
Best Damage Types Against Rennala
Rennala strongly resists magic damage, so these strategies work best:
- Physical melee weapons
- Bleed weapons
- Jump attacks
- Rock-based sorceries
- Aggressive stagger pressure
Magic-heavy builds should consider bringing backup melee weapons specifically for this fight.
Video
Step-by-Step
- Enter Phase 1 and locate the glowing singing scholars.
- Strike three glowing scholars to break Rennala’s shield.
- Rush Rennala and deal heavy melee damage.
- Back away before her magical explosion.
- Repeat until Phase 2 begins.
- Sprint toward Rennala’s opening Comet Azur attack.
- Dodge sideways as the beam fires.
- Summon Spirit Ashes immediately after dodging.
- Stay aggressive with melee attacks and jump attacks.
- Ignore most spirit summons and keep pressure on Rennala.
- Back away when she summons the large moon attack.
What You Need
- Strong physical damage weapon
- Optional bleed weapon
- Spirit Ashes
- High magic resistance gear
- Fast dodge mobility
Best Strategy
The safest strategy is to aggressively stay close to Rennala during Phase 2 and repeatedly stagger her with melee attacks before she can chain powerful sorceries or summon too many spirit allies.
Do not play too defensively. The longer the fight lasts, the more dangerous her spell pressure becomes.
Rewards
- Great Rune Of The Unborn
- Character respec system
- Progression beyond Academy Of Raya Lucaria
Tips
If you are struggling as a magic-focused build, switch to physical damage weapons temporarily for this fight.
Rennala’s magic resistance is extremely high, and aggressive melee pressure is far more effective than long-range spell trading.
