What Is Gilgamesh Island?

Gilgamesh Island is one of the largest optional endgame activities in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Hidden deep within the Meridian Ocean, the island only appears after completing nearly every major World Intel objective tied to Protorelics and regional summons.

The island serves as a major late-game challenge area featuring:

  • powerful combat encounters
  • summon rematches
  • endgame rewards
  • the optional Gilgamesh boss fight

If you are aiming for full completion or preparing for Hard Mode, this area is extremely important.

Step 1 – Complete Every Protorelic Questline

To unlock the island, you must complete all Protorelic activities across the game’s six major regions.

These are listed under Phenomenon Intel in Chadley’s intel menu.

Required regions:

  • Grasslands
  • Junon
  • Corel
  • Gongaga
  • Cosmo Canyon
  • Nibel

Each region contains four stages of Protorelic progression with unique mechanics, minigames, or combat scenarios.

Until every Protorelic chain is finished, the island will not appear.

Step 2 – Complete Chadley’s Summon Intel

You must also fully strengthen each regional summon.

This requires:

  • finding all regional Summon Crystals
  • interacting with every crystal location
  • raising summon strength to Rank 4
  • defeating the summon encounters in Chadley’s Battle Simulator

These summons include powerful encounters like:

  • Titan
  • Phoenix
  • Kujata
  • Alexander
  • Bahamut Arisen

If you skip crystal scanning, some summon fights remain incomplete and the island progression will not trigger correctly.

Step 3 – Trigger Gilgamesh Island

After completing all Protorelic questlines and summon progression requirements, a cutscene automatically plays showing a mysterious island emerging from the ocean.

This normally happens during Chapter 12 or early Chapter 13, depending on your completion pace.

At this point, Gilgamesh Island permanently appears on the world map.

Honestly, the game treats this reveal like you just awakened an ancient weapon. Chadley is probably more excited than he should be.

Step 4 – Sail To Gilgamesh Island

Board the Tiny Bronco and sail north from Under Junon into the Meridian Ocean.

Look for:

  • a massive torii gate
  • rocky cliff formations
  • a narrow cavern entrance
  • docking points near the shoreline

Navigate through the winding cave path until you can dock safely and enter the island proper.

Step 5 – Complete The Island Combat Trials

Before facing Gilgamesh, you must clear several difficult combat encounters scattered around the island.

These fights act as challenge gates and often involve:

  • powerful summon variants
  • duo encounters
  • advanced enemy mechanics
  • endgame-level damage output

Come prepared with:

  • upgraded materia
  • optimized party setups
  • healing support
  • elemental coverage

This area is balanced much closer to endgame content than standard regional exploration.

How To Prepare For Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is one of the hardest optional bosses in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and can overwhelm unprepared parties quickly.

Before challenging him, consider:

  • maxing core materia
  • leveling synergy abilities
  • unlocking stronger folio upgrades
  • crafting endgame accessories
  • finishing additional simulator challenges

A balanced party with strong stagger pressure usually performs much better than pure damage-focused setups.

Why Gilgamesh Island Matters

Beyond the boss fight itself, Gilgamesh Island is essentially the game’s final optional exploration challenge and one of the biggest completion milestones in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Unlocking it means you’ve completed nearly every major intel system in the game:

  • Protorelics
  • summon intel
  • regional exploration
  • combat simulator progression

Basically, if Chadley hasn’t become your full-time roommate by this point, you probably missed something.
