Quick Answer

To solve the Magonga Mushroom puzzle in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, you must bend the mushroom stem in order from the most flexible direction to the least flexible direction before pulling it out. Test all directions first using the left analog stick, then tug the mushroom in the correct order to avoid snapping it.

The puzzle appears during The Spice of Life side quest in Gongaga. Follow your Jungle Chocobo scent trail to locate each mushroom, and save before harvesting if you want perfect pulls without retrying the entire route.

How The Gongaga Mushroom Puzzle Works

The mushroom puzzle in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth appears during The Spice of Life side quest in Gongaga. While helping Cissnei gather ingredients for her soup, you’ll eventually need to harvest rare Magonga Mushrooms hidden around Magon Hill.

Unlike most gathering activities in the game, this one is surprisingly picky about timing and direction order. Pull the wrong way too early and the mushroom snaps immediately.

Thankfully, once you understand how the flexibility system works, every mushroom follows the same basic logic.

How To Start The Spice Of Life Quest

The Spice of Life becomes available near the end of Chapter 9 after completing the Teach Me, Great Warrior side quest.

Speak with Cissnei inside her house in Gongaga to begin. After gathering vegetables and Gongaga Rock Salt, you’ll eventually head south toward Magon Hill to search for the mushrooms.

How To Find The Magonga Mushrooms

Travel south from Gongaga using your Jungle Chocobo. Follow the path beyond the southern gate until you reach Magon Hill.

Once nearby, use your Chocobo scent tracking ability:

  • Hold up on the D-Pad
  • Follow the orange scent ribbon
  • Ride toward the highlighted mushroom locations

Each trail leads directly to a hidden Magonga Mushroom spot.

How To Solve The Mushroom Puzzle

When interacting with a mushroom, you’ll enter a harvesting minigame.

The goal is to determine which directions have the most flexibility before pulling the mushroom free.

Step 1: Test Every Direction

Use the left analog stick to gently push the mushroom in all directions.

Watch carefully for:

  • how far the mushroom bends
  • how much resistance it has
  • how much the camera zooms in

The direction with the most movement is the loosest side.

Step 2: Rank The Directions

You must pull the mushroom in this order:

  1. Most flexible direction
  2. Second most flexible
  3. Third most flexible
  4. Least flexible direction

The exact order changes every time you play, so there is no universal button sequence.

Step 3: Pull The Mushroom

After selecting the correct order, hold L2 and R2 to harvest the mushroom.

If the order is correct, you’ll successfully pull out a perfect mushroom. If not, the stem snaps and you’ll need to try again.

Why Mushroom 3 Is Harder

The third mushroom tends to frustrate players the most because it has additional pull directions and tighter flexibility differences between each side.

On PC, many players find this section much easier using a controller instead of mouse and keyboard due to analog sensitivity.

You’ll also encounter nearby Gorgon Mane enemies at later mushroom locations, so clear them out first before focusing on the puzzle itself.

Save Before Every Mushroom

If you want perfect harvests, save before interacting with each mushroom.

This lets you quickly reload without repeating the entire gathering route if the mushroom snaps. It saves a surprising amount of time, especially on the third pull.

The Spice Of Life Rewards

After collecting all three Magonga Mushrooms and the required Rock Salt, return to Cissnei in Gongaga.

Completing the quest rewards you with:

  • relationship progress with Aerith
  • EXP and Party EXP
  • Chakra Earrings
  • additional regional completion progress

Honestly, after hearing Cloud grunt through mushroom harvesting for ten minutes, you’ve earned the rewards.

Step-by-Step

  1. Start The Spice of Life side quest in Gongaga
  2. Follow the southern path toward Magon Hill
  3. Use your Jungle Chocobo scent tracking ability
  4. Follow the orange trail to each mushroom location
  5. Test every mushroom direction using the left analog stick
  6. Pull the mushroom from most flexible direction to least flexible direction
  7. Hold L2 and R2 to harvest
  8. Repeat for all three mushrooms
  9. Return ingredients to Cissnei

Warnings

  • The correct pull order changes every attempt
  • Pulling the wrong direction too early snaps the mushroom instantly
  • Later mushroom locations contain nearby Gorgon Mane enemies
  • Keyboard controls can make the puzzle harder due to analog sensitivity

Rewards

  • Chakra Earrings
  • relationship progress with Aerith
  • EXP
  • Party EXP
  • side quest completion progress

Tips

  • Save before every mushroom if you want perfect pulls
  • Watch how far the mushroom bends rather than rushing inputs
  • The loosest direction always gets pulled first
  • Using a controller makes the puzzle much easier on PC
